My list as it stood at the end of 2005. Differences in the ratings vs list position reflect changing opinions over time.

1.06 - "an average-to-weak year – many releases by artists I like; lots of good, even great records, but very very few excellent ones. Everything under about #12 on my list was pretty interchangeable rankings-wise"

2005 Albums Of The Year, music, albums,

Aha Shake Heartbreak

Frances the Mute
I think I actually like their 2003 release a hair better, but that’s like trying to argue that Meddle is better than Animals etc. Yes, it could use some editing, and yes, in many other years it wouldn’t have beat out every other release, but still a great work.
Get Behind Me Satan

interesting that two foreign-language albums made my Top 10. Then again since the USA peaked in 1999 or so, why wouldn’t our music have as well, eh?
Ta det lugnt

With Teeth
homeboy remembered how to write songs. His most consistently strong record.

<![CDATA[10 Albums That Shaped Modern Day Pop Punk Music]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/10-albums-that-shaped-modern-day-pop-punk-music/saintmort
These are the giant influences to the genre that launched thousands of fan sites and festivals...

To make things interesting I purposely left off Green Day and Blink 182
10 Albums That Shaped Modern Day Pop Punk Music,

End Is Forever
A lot of people believe that the Ataris' best album is "Blue Skies, Broken Hearts, Next 12 Exits". That tends to be general public opinion, to those people I say give 'End is Forever' another listen. While BSBH has some great songs like (San Damis High School Football Rules the greatest song in pop punk history). End is Forever really took auto-biographical writing to a whole new level with songs like "Summer Wind Will Always be Our Song" and "How I spent my Summer Vacation".
Got Beat Up
According to their Last FM page "Pop Punk wouldn’t be where it is today if not for the contributions of Weston". Many people disagree with this statement but I am not one. Their brilliantly multiple vocal layers and harmonies were completely unheard of before Got Beat Up. All 3 vocalists do fantastic jobs on their solo tracks but Jimmy is the star of this show. From the short silly song "New Shirt" to the poppy love song "Clumbsy Shy" this album more than any pop punk CD is about high school that sounds like it was written by high schoolers. A must listen for music fans of all genres but specifically Weezer fans
Life in General
MxPx looked at their blueprints from their last album "Teenage Politics" and kicked it up a notch to a whole new level. Life in General IS the handbook for High School. More so than any other album in punk music. Songs like "The Wonder Years" and "doin’ Time" were quick and simple songs outlining the life of a teenager while "Chick Magnet" and "Move to Berminton" are simple and beautiful love songs and then finally you have tracks like "Southbound" and "New York to Nowhere" about touring.
Considered their greatest work (and rightfully so) Pinkerton practically invented the Emo Genre. I could go on and on about why every track is amazing, or how Butterfly is the most bittersweet song ever written. Or Why the Good Life is still one of the catchiest songs ever written but I'll simply leave you with the lyrics to the bridge in El Scorcho which basically explains what the album is about and what started a Genre that won't go away.

"How stupid is it, Can't talk about it, I gotta sing about it make a record of (my heart)
How stupid is it, won't you give me a minute, just come up to me and say hello
How stupid is it, for all to know that you want me too
But baby I just don't know what to do
Or Maybe I'm scared to say, I'm falling for you"
Something to Write Home About
This is what music is all about. Beyond it's incredible influence on pop punk, 10 years after it's release Get Up Kid's Something to write home About is STILL the best album every written about a break up. Whether they're saying good-bye and meaning goodnight (Holiday), or begging for a chance to start over (Out of Reach) or sarcastically apologizing (My Apology) The album covers a relationships crumbling, but it still ends hopeful. Even after all these you can't for get that Matt Pryor will always be there to catch you (I'll Catch You)
Take This to Your Grave
There is no way that anyone can deny the influence this CD has had on music over the last 5 years. Now this is probably a debatable choice since this is the list of CDs to influence modern pop punk and well… Fall Out Boy is the defination of modern pop punk. This album however is the one that inspired thousands of other bands. Before FOB were on the radio telling us to dance, dance and covering Michael Jackson they were righting some of the most painful sounding heartbroken lyrics. IF you don’t believe me download "Take that Mick he just made my list of things to do" that contains lines like ‘As you wrap your car around that tree; your makeup looks so great next to his teeth’.
Through Being Cool
MxPx looked at their blueprints from their last album "Teenage Politics" and kicked it up a notch to a whole new level. Life in General IS the handbook for High School. More so than any other album in punk music. Songs like "The Wonder Years" and "doin’ Time" were quick and simple songs outlining the life of a teenager while "Chick Magnet" and "Move to Berminton" are simple and beautiful love songs and then finally you have tracks like "Southbound" and "New York to Nowhere" about touring.
Turn the Radio Off
Reel Big Fish never was a band that was "on-top-of -the-world" but Turn the Radio Off certainly put them them in public view with the undeniably catchy "Sellout". Turn the Radio Off show cases the band doing what they'd continue doing for years. Writing catchy songs that sounded really happy but lyrically were full of Angst, Depression and Anger. Think about how many bands have repeated this system
Your Favorite Weapon
Brand New is probably more famous now for their original musical feud with Taking Back Sunday, but on their debut album Your Favorite Weapon they blended High School Nostalgia with depressed/angry love songs and created some of the most important songs in Pop Punk history. The Bridge to "Seventy times Seven" might be the ONLY song lyrics used in more away messages than the lyrics to "You're So Last Summer".
The Moon Is Down
Before he was Dashboard Confessional, Chris Carriaba sang for Further Seems Forever on their debut album. What it gave us was 10 tracks of the most perfectly epic sounding music ever sold to the pop punk/emo audiences. Almost 8 years after it's release bands still cover songs like "Snowbirds and Townies". To really understand what the hype is all about I recommend listening to "New Years Project" and "Just Until Sundown" and get what everyone has been raving about.

<![CDATA[The Best Forgotten Teen Pop Acts]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/best-forgotten-teen-pop-acts/mal1
What to say about the teen pop movement. Beginning in the late 1980s, the teen pop phase in music has always been an infectious, fun, and upbeat guilty pleasure. The songs stay in your head, though often times annoyingly, but as for the artists that made them? Every boy-band you can remember from the '90s have virtually disappeared. Justin Timberlake, of *NSYNC fame is probably the only former boy-bander that was able to find success well into his adult life. Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees is a regular on reality TV, but wasn't able to capitalize on his boy-band success since the group broke up. The Backstreet Boys are still together and working on material, but nobody cares. The women of that time fared much better. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce (of Destiny's Child), and Pink all became megastars. Mandy Moore continues to make records, but has been more successful in other endeavors, as has Jessica Simpson. For the most part, however, the sub-genre produced a large number of here today, gone tomorrow type acts. Does anyone remember LFO with their hit "Summer Girls" in 1999? What ever happened to Willa Ford, teen pop's first "bad girl"? Where did S Club 7, the British pop group with a successful ABC Family show of the same name, ever go? Those names are foreign to a generation of Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus, but luckily (or unfortunately), someone has remembered these acts and more and we will vote on which act we remember and miss the most. Some of these acts you can say are underrated, and some of them you may never want to see again. Anyways, this list is for anyone with '90s nostalgia and shameless enough to vote!

<![CDATA[The Best Singing Drummers]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/best-singing-drummers/rockboy
Prepare to be impressed by this list of drummers who also sing. These musicians are both notable as capable drummers and as vocalists. Many of them performed in both roles in a single band, including Ringo Starr (who did vocals and drums on The Beatles' "Octopus Garden" and "Yellow Submarine," among others) and Karen Carpenter. Other singing drummers became notable for their vocal skills only after parting ways with their former band, as is the case with Dave Grohl. Initially known primarily as the drummers for iconic grunge band Nirvana, he stepped out from behind the drum kit to serve as the frontman and lead singer for his follow-up project, Foo Fighters.

Drummers are often the least visible, famous members of a large, popular rock band, making the number of great percussionists who have proven themselves to be great singers rather low. (The number dwindled even further on April 19, 2012, when the world lost the legendary Band drummer Levon Helm.) Vote for your favorite drummer/vocalists, and if you can think of any that haven't made the cut, add them at the bottom of the page.

<![CDATA[The Best Romantic Country Songs]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/best-romantic-country-songs/ranker-music

Love is the most relatable theme in the entire world. Everyone feels it for someone or something at least once in their life, or wishes they could feel it. Songs about love and romance never get old or trite because we never stop feeling love.

<![CDATA[The Best Songs About Police]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/songs-about-police/ranker-music

For this list we're ranking the best songs about the police, including many rap songs about police. Cops are the people who are supposed to keep societies safe. Yet many times musicians feel differently, and their feelings ends up in the tunes that make up this list of songs about cops. Many of these songs about police are a call to action, speaking out against the injustices perpetrated by law enforcement officers. Some beckon listeners to call the police to get protection. And some deal with the police as an unknowable force in a larger spiritual crisis. However you think of the police, you’re sure to find someone who felt the same way, and wrote a song about it that’s on this list.

If “Fuck tha Police” by N.W.A. has nothing but contempt for law enforcement, then “Mrs. Officer” by Lil Wayne has nothing but love… at least for a certain sexy policewoman. The hip-hop gamut of rappers’ emotions is run between the two tracks.

“I Fought the Law,” originally written by Sonny Curtis of the Crickets, has had many popular groups cover the track, including the Clash, Dead Kennedys and Hank Williams Jr.

Sometimes police can be used as a symbol of persecution in a more abstract sense, such as in Radiohead’s “Karma Police” and Cheap Trick’s “Dream Police.” Both tracks deal the police as a mysterious, eerie force that evokes dread.

<![CDATA[The Best Songs About Birth]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/songs-about-birth/ranker-music

This list of songs about birth and being born will definitely get you voting. Why? You had to have been born in order to even be reading this. We all have to enter this life, which makes the subject of birth such rich territory for musicians. Whether waxing eloquent on their place of birth, being born again spiritually, or being born for some sort of destiny, there are a lot of ways to write a song about birth, and we've listed them all here. You were born to check this list out.

Some of these songs about being born are literal while others are less direct. Albert King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign” was performed and remixed by Alabama 3, and the result, "Woke Up This Morning," became the theme song to The Sopranos. It also became less about the narrator's origins but still held onto the basic theme.

“Born to Die” is a very popular title for songs about birth. Artists who’ve used the title include Lana Del Rey, Donna Summer, Grand Funk Railroad, and Anti-Flag. “Born to Run” is another popular song title for songs that start at the beginning, as the title has been used by Bruce Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Emmylou Harris, and Marillion.

Which of these songs about birth were you born to listen to? Vote up your favorite songs on the list! And if you have a birth song in mind but can't find it here, then add it!

<![CDATA[The Most Upbeat Songs About the End of the World]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/songs-about-the-end-of-the-world/ranker-music

The end of the world sounds like depressing topic, yet musicians have been making great, high-energy music out of the apocalypse for years. This is a list of apocalyptic songs that are pretty upbeat, musically speaking. These songs may be about the end of the world, but they're also toe-tappers. Or at least they're not too panicked about armageddon. Maybe it’s the need to get your rocks off before the world kicks the bucket, but it seems like when the world starts ending, the party will be just getting started. Let this list of songs about the end of the world be your doomsday playlist.

Not sweating nuclear apocalypse is the topic of many famous songs, including Nena’s “99 Luftballoons” and Europe’s “The Final Countdown.” R.E.M.’s “It's The End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” was a big hit for the band and is maybe the most famous apocalyptic song on the list.

Wanna write a song about the end of the world? Then just call your song “The End of the World. It worked for the Cure, the Pet Shop Boys, Skeeter Davis, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Dio, and Busta Rhymes.

<![CDATA[10 Rock Stars Who Died at 26]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/rock-stars-who-died-at-26/ranker-music

List of rock stars who died at age 26. This list features rock stars from any era who died at the age of 26. They come from different areas of rock, from hard rock to R&B/rock blends, and even folk rock, but each musician on this list was a great in his or her genre – and each died much too young. While they may have only lived to 26, the rock stars on this list are still remembered and beloved by fans today.

Perhaps one of the most famous rock stars who died at 26 is Hillel Slovak, a founding member of the California rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. He was a talented guitarist who heavily influenced the sound of the Chili Peppers, and he was proficient in playing everything from speed metal, to funk, to hard rock. Slovak was taken in typical rock and roll fashion: He overdosed on heroin. His music is still loved today, even though his career was cut so short.

Interestingly, musicians on this list may have gained a more notorious type of fame if they had lived only one more year. Rock stars who died at the age of 27 are said to be in the 27 Club, the name given to the group of rock stars who have died at that age, generally in terrible circumstances.

On this list, you can find all the rock stars whose fame and fortune couldn’t protect them from dying young. While these rock stars may only have lived to 26, their memories will live on and on as we continue to remember them and enjoy their music.

10 Rock Stars Who Died at 26,

Gram Parsons
Gram Parsons’s music earned him a spot as No. 87 on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” in 2005. Parsons, who performed with The Byrds and Emmylou Harris, died after what was officially ruled an overdose of alcohol and morphine in 1973 in Joshua Tree, California.
Hillel Slovak
Hillel Slovak was one of the original members of the rock group Red Hot Chili Peppers. He played guitar on the albums Freaky Styley and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan before overdosing on heroin in 1988.
Jesse Belvin
Jesse Belvin was a singer, pianist, and songwriter who gained fame in the 1950s. He recorded songs like "Goodnight My Love" and "The Girl of My Dreams" before his death in a car crash in 1960, in Arkansas.
Jimmy McCulloch
Jimmy McCulloch is perhaps best remembered for his tenure with Wings (1974-1977), although his guitar work can be heard on many albums by other great artists, including John Entwistle and Peter Frampton. He died of a heroin overdose in 1979.
Nick Drake
Nick Drake was a native of England, but his folk-rock music is praised across the globe. He suffered from depression during his lifetime, and in 1974, he overdosed on a prescribed anti-depressant. No one is certain whether this was intentional or accidental.
Otis Redding
Otis Redding, who hailed from Georgia, was an influential and popular singer known for his soul and R&B records. He died in 1967 when his plane crashed on the way to a performance in Wisconsin.
Paul Kossoff
Paul Kossoff, an English guitarist who played with the band Free and was listed at number 51 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," died in 1976. He died of a heroin-related heart problem, though it is likely that his unhappiness with the end of Free also contributed to a decline in his health.
Yutaka Ozaki
Yutaka Ozaki was a popular musician in his native Japan. He passed away in 1992 under mysterious circumstances. The official ruling was pulmonary edema, although some have suggested that his death was actually a homicide.
Matthew Fletcher
Matthew Fletcher was the drummer for British band Heavenly. The group released four albums, but Fletcher died just before the release of their fourth album, having committed suicide.

<![CDATA[15 Jamming Jazz Movies]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/15-jamming-jazz-movies/konnoisseur411
Jazz has been around longer than rock, hip hop, rhythm and blues, reggae and a lot of other tune styles so it’s great to see how the Smithsonian Institute every year promotes April as Jazz Appreciation Month. It seems to be one of those kinds of music that people either love or hate, or go from neutral where it’s concerned to acquiring a nonstop taste for it. It’s become such a butt-kicking powerful tradition that loads of books, films, and world-class events have been inspired by it. A lot of movies use jazz as background music but these could be called heavy hitters that give you people who made and lived the music. This list is some of the better ones I’ve found so far but I’m leaving it open for added suggestions. It contains feature films and a few documentaries.
15 Jamming Jazz Movies,

Forest Whitaker in the title role of this 1988 film as saxophonist Charlie "Yardbird" Parker is awesome on top of awesome. Director Clint Eastwood gets all kinds of kudos for putting the entire project together. But Whitaker makes you feel what it was like to be a musical talent of Parker’s caliber caught between the demands of his art, drug issues, and the racial factors of the times back in the Jazz Age.
Cabin in the Sky
This is a 1946 classic that makes you feel like you were there dancing, swinging, and hanging with all these cool people. Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington give up some seriously good vibes.
Jazz on a Summer's Day
"Jazz on a Summer’s Day" is a concert film of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1959 and a lot of the music in it is not jazz at all. It does have some giants like Louis Armstrong and Eric Dolphy. It also has the world’s most famous gospel singer at the time, Mahalia Jackson, and rock ‘n roller Chuck Berry. Everybody seems to play and sing their hearts out and that brings it all together.
Lady Sings the Blues
Billie Holiday is considered one of the greatest female jazz artists of all time and Diana Ross did a decent enough job playing her in this movie that she got nominated for an Oscar. Sound track for the film is bitchin’ for days. It gets extra points for comic genius Richard Pryor as Piano Man.
Mo' Better Blues
Mo' Better Blues is a Spike Lee Joint with Denzel Washington as jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam. It works because it’s Lee and Washington with an amazing soundtrack by Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard.
Paris Blues
"Paris Blues" with black icon Sidney Poitier and white icon Paul Newman was radical for when it came out in 1961 but for modern times it’s just pretty cool. Plus Duke Ellington did the score.
Round Midnight
"Round Midnight" was based on the lives of several famous jazzmen and stars Dexter Gordon as a black musician living in Paris. Europe and black American jazz musicians have had some kind of thing going on since the 1920s and this film dramatizes it in a sometimes sweet and sometimes too-much kind of way. It’s the real deal though and the music’s always slammin’.
The Cotton Club
"The Cotton Club" is a fun movie with a lot of talented people like tap dancer Gregory Hines and Richard Gere as a jazz cornetist. Picture Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and hot babe dancers at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance.
The Man with the Golden Arm
"The Man with a Golden Arm" in 1955 has superstar Frank Sinatra playing a role similar to "Bird" later on. The big obvious difference is Sinatra being white and a drummer, but jazz seems to have always been one of the most integrated musics. Frank Sinatra in fact is on the 2012 Jazz Appreciation Month poster. This one’s got another killer soundtrack.
The Terminal
This film in 2004 got a lot of props for Tom Hanks as a Russian living temporarily in the JFK airport terminal and Catherine Zeta Jones as the beauty he kind of falls in love with. The driving plot behind the comedy and romance though was Hanks’ character’s attempt to complete a collection of autographs by famous jazz musicians all included on a classic photograph. The character near the end gets to kick it with legendary jazzman Benny Golson.

<![CDATA[Rock Stars & Musicians Turning 50 in 2015]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/musicians-turning-50-in-2015/michelle-nati

2015 is the year Gen-X-ers on the older end of the spectrum hit the big 5-0! Which musicians and rock stars are turning 50 in 2015? Members of Generation X were born between the years 1965 and 1978 (give or take a year, depending on your source). Known as the “sandwich generation,” they are a dark horse demographic sandwiched between 80 million baby boomers and 78 million millennials. In 2015, they're starting to get real old, with lots of famous musicians turning 50 left and right.

Despite being eclipsed by the sheer numbers and popular culture of those surrounding them, X-ers have carved out an esteemed niche musically. Their influence continues to permeate listening patterns, even today. Remember – grunge, hip hop, and alternative all gained prominence during the years when those in Gen X were the demographic.

Nineties music icons including Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, and Bjork are all turning 50 in 2015. If that’s not enough to make you wonder where the years went, former NWA rapper, music mogul and Beats creator Dr. Dre now graces the cover of AARP (well, in a birthday Tweet by the organization, anyway).

So, sit back, relax, and check out this list of rockers, rappers, singer-songwriters, and notable musicians who are blowing out 50 candles on their birthday cakes in 2015. While some will be a little better known to you than others, all will surely surprise you and might make you feel a little old (though not as old as you'll feel when you learn which celebrities are turning 60 in 2015!).

<![CDATA[The Very Best of Bad Lip Reading]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/the-very-best-of-bad-lip-reading/kel-varnsen
Ever wanted to hear Michele Bachman talk about curing nausea with one cockeyed boar? How about listening to bullied Internet celebrity Rebecca Black sing about gang fights? Perhaps Rick Perry explaining using goats in the computer industry or Ludacris rapping about a low-riding hobbit is more your style? With the very best of Bad Lip Reading you get all that and much more hilarious gibberish.

It's no secret that many times politicians and musicians don't exactly make a whole lot of sense, but what would happen if someone turned down the volume and tried to figure out what was being said based on lip reading? Spoiler: It makes even less sense but it's freaking hilarious! The very best of Bad Lip Reading does exactly that and has become a YouTube sensation as a result.

The theory is simple and the results are ridiculously funny, but there is actually a highly secretive and personal story behind this humorous phenomenon. The man behind the scenes explained his story to Rolling Stone on the condition of anonymity.

According to the interview, the one-man show is written and produced by a music and video producer from Texas. He got the idea from is now-deaf mother who became an expert at lip reading out of necessity. The BLR mastermind tried lip reading himself but with disastrous results. Then inspiration struck and the rest is history.

The work of the Bad Lip Reading producer has attracted over 120,000 YouTube subscribers and even impressed some of the musicians who made the original songs. Michael Buble, whose song was remade by BLR, was so enamored with the parody that he sent a response video thanking the producer and calling him "an evil" genius.

Of course all of the response has not been positive, which is perhaps part of the reason the producer remains more secretive than artist Banksy. Universal Music Group, acting on behalf of Nicki Minaj and Will.i.am, successfully got the BLR parody titled "Dirty Spaceman" removed from YouTube. Shhh, another anonymous person uploaded it again for all to enjoy.

With politicians ramping up efforts in advance of elections and musicians constantly releasing new music, it's going to take more than a measly DMCA notice to stop the brilliance that is behind Bad Lip Reading. So grab your Russian Unicorn and buckle up. This is just getting good!

I understand "storytelling" is such a broad term in rap, but the songs must include at least some form of running narrative or scenario. I find that when a rapper has a great storytelling song, they're consistently great in this department, so expect to see many from the same artist.

<![CDATA[Rap's Greatest Posse Cuts]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/rap_s-greatest-posse-cuts/first-l
Rap is typically a very dog-eat-dog musical genre. Whether it's on wax, in the streets, and, recently, over such internet outlets as Twitter.com, rappers are prone to clash with one another. When hip-hop's brightest stars are on the same page, however, hit music ensues. When three or more MCs come together, it indicates some form of unity within the genre. These days, deejays (particularly, one who goes by the name of Khaled) have made hip-hop fantasy dream teams come to life. On this list, we true hip-hop fans rank and debate the greatest hip-hop posse cuts of all time, featuring hip-hop's most lyrical heavyweights from all different walks of life. Some of these jams are familiar and resonates with the younger generation of fans, while others are forgotten gems, but are otherwise noteworthy collaborations that made a mark on the genre. Please vote for the sake of unity, or lack there of, in rap and hip-hop.
Rap's Greatest Posse Cuts,

B**** Please II
Then rookie, Eminem found himself outshined by rap vets Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on this West Coast-style banger off of the Marshall Mathers LP. Nate Dogg handled the hook, while Xzibit delivered an impressive cameo. While Slim may have been out-rapped by the pros on this track (though, the same thing wouldn't happen nowadays), his verse remained memorable, rapping in Snoop's voice and then switching into his imfamous goofball drawl.
Who knows what Kanye was thinking when he put this together? Eerie, creepy, sexy, and just plain weird all at the same time, Monster (and the video to accompany the song) turned the hip-hop world on it's axis. Ross' four bars? Forgettable. Yeezy's master word-play? Unforgettable. Jay-Z's veteran touch? Unneccesary, but still awesome. Nicki's 32 bar mud-slinging, accent switching, creeptastic, side splitting verse? One Word: WOW. It was like eight rappers on a track instead of four. She never had a better verse.

Rap Game

Forever- Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Eminem
While the So Gone EP was a great introduction in the music world to former teen star-turned-rapper, Aubrey Drake Graham, the single off of some LeBron James documentary turned out to be a sign of good things to come from the Canadian rookie. Even though he couldn't escape the shadow of Eminem's ridiculously killer closing verse (the start of a killer comeback), he still proved he can hold his own with Slim, Weezy, and Yeezy as a standout rapper to remember.

Self Destruction- KRS-One, D-Nice, Ms. Melodie, Delite, Daddy-O, Wise, Frukwan, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Just-Ice, Heavy D & Public Enemy
The first hip-hop posse cut in history featured the best MC's from the East Coast as an attempt to put the growing gang violence in New York to rest. It was an admirable attempt, however, as the '90s came in, the West Coast gang perspective grew wider, and the demand for gangster rap heavier. Still, it was a catchy song to sing along to and many still try to enforce the message.

Not Tonight (remix)
Nicki Minaj take notes. Long before Minaj would go on to rule the hip-hop world in the 2010's, Lil' Kim crafted perhaps the best all-female posse cut ever, with the help of Angie Marinez, Left Eye, Da Brat, and Missy Elliott to set this track on fire. The result? This Grammy nominated tune that showcases the unity with women in hip-hop.
All I Do Is Win (feat. T-Pain, Ludacris, Rick Ross & Snoop Dogg)
Khaled's first smash mainstream hit came with fiery hook from T-Pain. And who better to talk about winning than successful rappers like Luda and Snoop?
I Shot Ya (remix)
Way past his teenage fame, LL Cool J turned out to be one of the few rappers from the '80s to change and progress with the edgier hip-hop scene of the '90s. As one of the illest cuts from 1995's Mr. Smith LP, LL found himself surrounded by the best rookie talent on the East Coast, Keith Murray, Prodigy (of Mobb Deep), Fat Joe, and Foxy Brown. But Papa Cool J outshined them all, proving that he can roll with the best of them and the rest of them.

Freedom- Queen Latifah, Yo-Yo, Patra, Left Eye, MC Lyte, Nefertiti, Meshell N'Degeocello, Salt N' Pepa
In response to the R&B version from the Panther soundtrack, featuring the genres most prominent divas, the hip-hop version (and the first-ever all women posse cut) was a more aggressive approach. Dancehall queen Patra laid the hook down while Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, Salt-N-Pepa, and Me'Shell N'Degeocello dropped verses more memorable than the movie itself. The most memorable verse came from TLC's Left Eye who felt that the life of a bald eagle "is never more important than [her] people".

Flava in Ya Ear (remix)

<![CDATA[The Best Music Side Projects]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/list-of-music-side-projects-or-best-band-side-projects/rockboy
Like everyone else in the workforce, even our favorite rock stars need some time off from seeing his or her bandmates on occasion. This is why side projects have existed and why rock bands have spawned other bands and at times, been more creative and experimental than what fans are used to. Sometimes, the result is as good, if not better than the original outfit.

Though that doesn't happen often, it does happen from time to time that the side project is the best, most creative outlet for individual members that he or she can't achieve in their regular band. It can mean experimenting with synths or hardcore, or music like IDM or even EDM. Other times, it means powerhouses like Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison of The Beatles join forces, same for hip hop icons Jay-Z and Kanye West. Here are some of the best side projects in music history, which vary from genre to genre.

The end result is the same however: the better the individual parts, the better the band. If a side project like the Traveling Wilburys or Atoms For Peace doesn't have the components like each respect project has, then they're unlikely to get the recognition. Even a group like indie super side project The Postal Service wouldn't be as known if not for the participation of Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis.

Here are some of the top side projects of all time.

PJ Harvey's “Naked Cousin” and “Cousins of the Antichrist” by Chelsea Wolfe also made this list of the top songs about cousins.

“Cousin Kevin” is a twisted song that appeared on The Who's rock opera masterpiece Tommy. J. Cole, John Coltrane, and Yuck have all written songs related to these particular relatives, as well.

<![CDATA[History's Greatest Disco Songs, Ranked]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/best-disco-songs/ranker-music

When you think "disco," what comes to mind? Mirror balls, big hair, and bigger dance moves. The best disco songs might inspire these images, sure, but they also incorporate elements of funk, soul, and pop music, inspiring listeners to hit the dance floor and boogie oogie oogie until they drop.

Disco fever reached its peak in the late '70s, and a majority of the top disco songs on this list are from that time frame. And yes, you’ll find repeat artists listed – especially the unforgettable Donna Summer. Ask any disco fan to try and choose just one favorite Donna Summer song. It’s impossible. Her most popular and iconic disco tracks are all here, including “Last Dance,” “I Feel Love” and “Love to Love You Baby.” What deserves the highest rank? That's up to you to decide.

The Bee Gees also take multiple spots on this list of good disco songs. “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever” and “You Should Be Dancing” are just some of their biggest disco hits. The “Stayin’ Alive” soundtrack is basically a snapshot of all that was so great about this time in music history. Add a colorful dance floor (think Studio 54), a huge, diverse crowd filled with joy and total abandon, a disco ball and Tony Manero in that sweet white suit and boom – you’ve got an image that captures an entire era.

What are your favorite disco hit songs? These are some of the most famous in history, so check out the videos, bust some moves and vote for the best!

<![CDATA[Bonnaroo 09 Liveblog]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/bonnaroo-09-liveblog/clark-benson
"Liveblog" of Bonnaroo 2009. Bonnaroo 09 Reviews, some Setlists, etc. Listed in order of preference, not schedule order. Continually updated.

5PM Sat update: In the middle of a no-win situation; that would be the combo of Mule>Wilco>Volta (3 of my alltime fave live bands, followed by another, The Boss). It will be impossible to see all of Mule or Wilco due to overlap. I will have to split the baby.

12:30 AM sat update - i did my best. i have seen a lot of amazing rock. it is entirely possible that this day, Sat June 13, 2009, will prove to be my best-ever single day of Rock (one must count sets that start in the early AM as part of the prior day, to be fair). The key variables will be a) my stamina. b) Nine Inch Nails, who are going on at 1am, and who were one of if not the absolute best sets of music i saw last year.

2AM Sat/Sun AM stop the presses:
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails announces this is their last show ever in US at Bonnaroo

7:40PM Sun - it's current up to this point. Phish closing headline performance is the last thing on agenda. I need coffee.

10:10 PM Sun.
Coffee in bloodstream and halfway thru Phish there is BIG news: Bruce Springsteen is on stage performing with Phish. 3 songs so far. see details below.

Make sure to check out my review of Bonnaroo 2012 and to see other music festival reviews go here: http://www.ranker.com/profile-of/clark-benson.
Bonnaroo 09 Liveblog,

Bruce Springsteen
The Boss is rocking the house (frankly there is almost no chance that this would NOT be the case). After an opening Badlands the set may me a bit weighted towards the new record for a 10pm sat at a festival, but the audience, myself included, is still way into it

Bruce continues to be the consummate , Bono-level frontman. Still some boring song choices like Raise Your Hand in the first hour, in general high energy but lackluster in song choice except for the welcome surprise of Youngtown, one of my absolute fave post reunion E Street tracks. And yes, Nils still rocked all over the stage at the end, even post-surgery.

Then quite a curveball. Springsteen spends half of Raise your hand
grabbing signs from the audience. One is for 'Santa claus is coming to town'. Bruce: "it's too f**king hot for Santa". But they play it anyway, a full version, sloppy yes except for clarence's spot on "ho ho
hos". The stoners (ie 60% of aud) go nuts. Up next: growin up. Then The River, and one other classic. We are in the Zone.

The rest of the set is Excellent, as is my mood as i get right up front center, basically "10 rows" back. Apparently this is only the 2nd festival ever for the E Street band, which is surprising - while i've never known them to do a US festival, i had thought they had played a bunch in Europe.

It's a great show, crowd went nuts throughout, though i have definitely seen more enthusiastic and more packed bonnaroo crowds. Probably the most interesting thing was that the crowd went more ballistic for the combo of Radio Nowhere/Lonesome Day/Rising than they did for Growin Up/The River/Promised Land (maybe i'm getting Promised Land wrong but it was a classic and they did play PL tonite). that was kinda cool to see; having seen The Boss in arenas with older crowds, it was great to see the "oughts" material standing up with the twentysomethings.

By the same token, the setlist was pretty stale for a "Brucehead". But you gotta expect a more general set at a festival so I'm not going to dock him many points there.

I'm going to keep Phish at #1, mainly due to the earlier setlist weakness and the surprising perfectness of the Phish Friday show, but this was a hell of a set of Rock.
David Byrne
Byrne was one of those artists i was really happy to see on Bonnaroo this year because i didn't to go see him headline the Greek last year, but heard great things about the show and was hoping I'd get to see it. He and his band did not disappoint.

A 2 Hr "Byrne and Eno" set that was a good 50% Talking Heads classics, this show blew away for my tastes unlike his Bonnaroo set a few years back. I like pretty much everything the Talking Heads ever did, though i can't say they are one of my top bands. I am frankly not at all a fan of ANY David Byrne solo material, at least until the album last year w Eno, which i liked.
Gov't Mule
Opened w a song i didn't recognize.

2nd song "Don't Step On The Grass, Sam" is oddly livened up by the "Warren Clone" roadie holding up large placards with the pro-grass lyrics.

Yet another cover. Creep

It's only 30 mins in and warren has already pulled out short to midsize instru cover jams incorporating st. Stephen, Norwegian wood, 3rd stone from the sun, plus a familiar and an unfamiliar mule original. Yet it works.

Oh Jesus now it's belter skelter. W vox. Danny louis 2nd gtr. Sloppy but great energy. Hippies lapping it up.

Gov't mule only has 6 or 7 stone classic original songs, and The first hour also includes 2 of those ( banks of he deep end , beautifully broken). Then it's u2's one, time to head over to wilco. Just before crossing over I hear warren intro Grace Potter and her guitarist so I hang thinking I might hear their sick version of gold dust woman.

Instead - a most excellent surprise: Southern man. Caps off 65mins of killer mule-enough to bump them all the way up to #2 on the overall weekend list. Now it's wilco's turn.

High On Fire
3:15 sun

Full on shreadfest. Tent only half full but everyone here headbanging fierce. Great song choice - death is this communion, rulers of war, devilution, etc.

First time I've seen a guy in the middle of a circle pit w a Free Hugs hat on.

Honestly, they are killing it. Not a dull second. Hadn't seen these guys in a few years- was bummed when the mighty Down, on the early bonnaroo announcement, were subsequently removed. But HOF have proven a more than worthy replacement

Nine Inch Nails
First off - let's get it out of the way - Nine Inch Nails announced from the Bonnaroo stage that this would be their last ever US show. Trent Reznor has been saying they would be taking a LONG break from touring after this tour, but this is the first he has publicly said it would be their last show in the States (they are headed to Europe on this tour next). Probably just something said after fatigure - I'm sure after a long hiatus he will rethink things, as Reznor after all is NIN for all intents and purposes. But who knows.

90 mins into the latenite set, which had already been tailored into a 1am saturday night at a festival style show, reznor annouced, after introducing the band, that this will be the last US NIN show, as per reznor "I just can't do this to myself anymore" after thanking the audience and the fans who have stuck with nine inch nails all these years"

The set was already an atypical one, likely specifially crafted to be more exploratory for this particular set time. A song they wrote with Saul Williams was played, the members of Dillinger Escape Plan (playing Sun) came out for a even-thrashier-than-usual "Wish", one of the encores was the cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls" (off The Crow soundtrack), etc. No "Closer", though they did pull off a stunning "Hurt" as the final track.

The set to my eyes seemed to have some of the oddities/slower tracks that he was playing on the NINJA tour with Janes just recently, as well as a few of the ambient interludes from last years tour. It was not the tour de force of last year's Lollapalooza headline slot- the stage show wasn't as built out and the setlist wasn't packed with classes. Very cool show and glad to see something so different. We'll call it #4 for the weekend so far. (

Sunday will be a lighter day for me. Probably a good thing for my sanity and stamina.

Head over to main stage.
Find decent spot and park ass on ground.
Start to tire as 11pm start time passes.
Lights go out. Chords to 'chalkdust torture'
Limbs start flying or at least noodling.
Sudden slap as beach ball makes contact with face.
Phish have arrived.

Overall, a STUNNINGLY great set. As good as 1998-era Phish. Everyone sounded in fine form. Killer setlist as well which can be one of my major peeves with Phish as i loathe about 20% of their material.

As an added bonus, they didn't take a set break instead playing a solid 3hrs all thru, which was very thoughtful for my 41 year old body that can't rebound like it used to after sipping vodka + for 10 hours...
The Mars Volta
7:40pm sat
It is PACKed here, I'm kinda surprised. At least as many people at this stage as wilco. Sound is once again subpar at the which stage as it was also yesterday for yeah yeah yeahs and the first half of byrne.

Sound gets better in 2nd half of set. Volta playing a heavy heavy dark set that DOES include actual songs unlike the last time I saw them in a festival setting at vegoose a few years back (when they played a single 90 min jam - i'm not kidding)

Mix of material from all Volta periods. During one jam cedric vamps the first cover I have heard the Volta do in 12 or so shows I've seen- ' bullet' by the Misfits. Apparently he also did some Smiths lyrics, but that must've gone right over my head.

All in all a hellofa set and I can't wait to hear the new album. Mars volta comes In at #3 so far. Just a hair behind Wilco.

TV on the Radio
Another killer set from TVOTR. Coachella may have been a hair better, but who wants to split hairs.

I saw the last hour of a 75min set.
6:10PM Wilco is finishing I Am trying to break yr heart. Their 2nd song. Next company in my back and then a sick Handshake drugs. They sound Awesome.

Can see ben harper on platform grooving w his eyes closed to 'Impossible Germany'

great overall set, mostly last 4 albums. wilco certainly sounds great tonite, but then again i can't remember the last time they didn't (2002?)

About 90 mins in, after a killer Spiders, I head over to the other big stage to see the mars Volta. Wilco was excellent and they have now jumped to #2 of the weekend

Phish Sunday
Phish start things off on the wrong foot w me by opening with "AC/DC Bag". I really dislike this wet fish of a song iho I realize many Phish Heads hold it in high regard. It dawns on me that the Friday nite show contained no total clunker phish perennials, and one song on we've already eclipsed that.

Next up a fine NICU. But then, the morinic Gotta Jiboo. It's sunday nite of a long weekend and getting worried about keeping my energy levels. Luckily ensconsed in bleachers.

At this point there is Already Almost No Statistical chance that this show will surpass Friday

But they start to narrow the odds w better song choices, bringing me back into the game. Just finished insane Character Zero and now into an almost quadrophenic Tweezer. (and a killer Bathtub Gin) Things have gotten a LOT better.

Some more great playing - we're about 90mins in and it's become a pretty hot set, I am back in the game with better music and an iced cappuccino in my veins.

Trey goes into a story about the first show he ever saw, age 11, a show that has rarely been surpassed. The Boss at some long forgotten 3000 seater on the East Coast.

Bruce Springsteen comes out. We are now in Rock History territory.

Unfortunately, for me at least this collaboration was more Misery than History. 3 songs. 3 REALLY REALLY BAD song choices.

"Mustang Sally" - not surprising. I don't like it when Phish plays anything resembling the blues, nor do i need to hear this song again. It's OK for what it is, cool to see the Boss up there.

"Bobby Jean" - it was bad enuf that Springsteen played 2 songs off the loathesome Born In The USA album last nite, now I have to hear him play an impossible-to-jam-song with Phish.

"Glory Days" - ditto, plus he played it last nite.

I get the sense that the Phish guys never really got too deep back into the Boss after that, because why would they pick those 3 songs? Nonetheless, a once-in-a-lifetime kinda thing.

It's 10:40PM, set break. i am not going to last past midnite no matter how good things get

Update: I lasted till 12:15, they were finishing up (i heard a Suzie Greenberg encore as i was walking to car) 2nd set was much better for my ears than the first, starting with a killer deep jammy "Rock and Roll" and never really letting up. Definitely a set i need to get a recording of. Overall I'm going to stick the Sunday Phish show behind The Boss's Sat set, mainly because of the first set inconsistencies, but i am still very happy to see Phish back in the game in full form. It's one of those things where i didn't realize how much i missed them till i found myself deep in the groove. Hopefully the rumors of something Left Coast will turn out to be true.

From the brilliant and poignant 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash to the fun and sexy 'Any Man of Mine' by Shania Twain to the super-fresh and creative Taylor Swift videos, this is a list of the best, most well-known and innovative country videos ever made. Most of these videos have been played frequently on CMT and GMA, but some have crossed over to other music video channels, like VH1 and even MTV. Each one of the music videos on this list is embedded, so click away and then cast your vote for your favorites. And, if your personal fave isn't listed, feel free to add it!

As a huge country music fan, I've added what I think are the best country videos. Some are more recent hits by artists like Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum and yes, Taylor Swift, the current reigning queen of country music. But I also tried to include some true classics, like Martina McBride's 'Independence Day.' I wanted to include two Garth Brooks videos that I firmly believe should be on ANY 'best of' country music video list: 'The Thunder Rolls' and 'The Dance,' but both videos are not available to embed, sadly.

Enjoy this list of the greatest top county music videos and again, be sure to vote!

<![CDATA[Musicians Whose Grammy Wins Basically Made Their Careers]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/grammy-wins-that-boosted-a-career/ranker-music
The Grammy Awards can play a very important role in shaping an artist's career. With a victory, millions upon millions of unfamiliar music fans can suddenly recognize a musician and flock to listen to what impressed the voters. Sometimes, this boost takes a relatively unknown artist and turns them into a household name. There are plenty of examples of this happening since the inception of the Grammys. A number of great artists who might not have been heard of otherwise became stars. While it may have surprised outsiders, ultimately, these artists had their music heard by the masses.

So, who are the artists who had a Grammy win give their career a boost and most benefited from their Grammy wins? (It could have been in any category, not just Album of the Year or Best New Artist.) The likes of Amy Winehouse and Adele were already coming on strong with big singles, but their respective Grammy victories legitimized their music. Relatively new artists (at the time of their wins) like Eminem, Norah Jones, and a young Mariah Carey used their victories to launch their career into superstardom.

It's up to you to decide to determine which artists and musicians had the biggest career boost due to a Grammy victory. That said, if you notice someone missing from this list, feel free to add them. Vote or re-rank this list how you deem it to be fit.

<![CDATA[The Best 90s Music Videos]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/best-90s-music-videos/music-videos
The 90s were such an awesome time to be alive. Sure there was a booming economy, but the most important thing about that decade was that MTV still played music videos. There were countless classic 90's music videos. This list has the absolute best music videos from the 1990s.
You've got classic rap songs "Gin And Juice" and "California Love." You've got early nineties ballads - thankfully they don't make 'em like that anymore. We're looking at you Mariah Carey, Bryan Adams, and Toni Braxton. We've got some alternative classics like Weezer's "Buddy Holly," and the Beastie Boys' classic "Sabotage." This list has boy bands like Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch, and his brother Donny's band New Kids On The Block. There was a real clear trajectory in the nineties music video. It had been majorly focused on pop tunes and pop ballads, but moved towards a mix of pop with hip hop and alternative rock.
It was a different time back then, where you could flip on the television after school, and watch music videos until dinner. Record labels invested millions to making the coolest videos. For a while after the reprogramming of MTV it was thought that the art of the music video had been lost forever, but YouTube has become a platform for new filmmakers to watch these classics, and come up with ideas for their latest productions.

<![CDATA[The Best Songs About Laughing]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/songs-about-laughing/ranker-music
We know two things in this world to be true: One, that laughter is the best medicine, and two, that Bob Marley sings, "One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain." Therefore, we can determine that songs about laughing are the ultimate remedy for any ailment.

What's the best song about laughing? Madonna's hit, "Laugh to Keep from Crying" tops our list. In this song, Madge shares some of the sage advice she's had to learn as a celebrity whose personal life is anything but private. The title track on Ice Cube's seventh studio album "Laugh Now, Cry Later," raps about a disregard for consequences in order to find the ultimate pleasure in the moment.

If rock is more your thing check out The Rolling Stones jam, "Laugh I Nearly Died," or John Mellencamp's "Between a Laugh and a Tear." Vote up the best song about laughing below, and be sure to add any of your favorite laughter songs that we might have missed!

<![CDATA[The Most Shocking 2016 Grammy Nomination Snubs]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/2016-grammy-snubs/ranker-music
The nominations for the 2016 Grammy awards have finally arrived, and with them the inevitable heartbreaking snubs. In just about every category there are big names and influential artists who were not nominated for a 2016 Grammy. From Queen Bey to jazz upstart Kamasi Washington, Grammy 2016 snubs ruined the days of musicians from all sides of the industry.
Grammy nomination snubs are nothing new. From Prince’s “Purple Rain,” to the tectonic-shifting “Is This It” by The Strokes, vastly important albums have been either ignored or pushed to lesser categories by the clueless voting committee. If you’re upset about your favorite artist or album of the year being forgotten by powers that be, commiserate with us on this list of 2015 Grammy award snubs.

Don’t get it twisted, some of the 2016 Grammy nominees definitely deserve to be where they are. Who knew the Grammy committee knew who Courtney Barnett was? And how about Kendrick Lamar getting all the nominations?! Brilliant. Despite the nominees who truly deserve to their nods, there are plenty of 2016 Grammys snubs for artists, songs, and albums that got totally gypped. So many, in fact, that you could probably make an all new award show with the snubs from this year's Grammy awards.

Check out this list of the albums and musicians that were forgotten by the Grammy committee, and then vote on the 2016 Grammy nomination snubs. Feel free to add the best artists and albums that were not nominated for Grammys in 2016.

<![CDATA[Rappers Who Grew Up with Money]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/rappers-who-grew-up-rich/jessica-defino
Rap's most iconic songs are usually about one of three things: growing up poor, life on the streets, or overcoming struggles — and, oh yeah, bragging about making it out. Raps like "Changes" by Tupac and "Hard Knock Life" by Jay-Z have made the "struggling up-and-comer" rapper the genre's go-to stereotype. But what about rappers who grew up rich?

Privileged rappers don't exactly fit the mold. Some lie about their blessed upbringing so they don't lose street cred (like Tyga), some fully embrace spending daddy's money (like Childish Gambino), and some are just trying to step out of the shadow of their famous parents (like Ricky Hill and Chet Daze). Here are the most famous rappers who grew up as part of the upper class—read on to discover the best (and worst) rappers born rich.

Rappers Who Grew Up with Money,

Donald Glover
Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover, is an actor and rapper who grew up in Pacific Palisades, California with his well-to-do family — and he's not ashamed! He raps about his charmed upbringing in "Sweatpants," where the lyrics speak for themselves: "Furniture custom, you shop at IKEA. So Maserati, you whipping a Kia. Spending this money, it's longer than Nia. Live like a Coppola, me and Sofia. Waking up broke, man, wouldn't wanna be ya."
Jermaine Dupri
Jermaine Dupri hit the familial jackpot — his father, Michael Mauldin, was a top executive at Columbia Records. Beside providing him with a cushy upbringing, Mauldin no doubt helped Dupri launch his career as a rapper and producer. It pays to have parents in the biz!
Lil Romeo
Lil Romeo is practically rap royalty: his father is rapper Master P and his mother, Sonya C, is a former rapper as well. His uncles (C-Murder and Silkk the Shocker) and cousin (Mo B. Dick) are also in the industry. Thanks to family connections, Romeo signed his first record deal at age five and has been living in the lap of luxury ever since.
Wiz Khalifa
Wiz Khalifa grew up on the streets... of beautiful North Dakota, that is. The rapper was born to two military parents, and they moved whenever their jobs required it. Wiz has lived in Germany, England, and Japan. Not too shabby!
Tyga once claimed he was from Compton, but the rapper lied: he grew up in Gardena, a nice suburb of Los Angeles. His parents also apparently drove a Range Rover! Nice try Tyga, but you're not fooling anyone.
Iggy Azalea
Australian rapper Iggy Azalea had a very comfortable upbringing in Mullumbimby. Her father was a painter and her mother worked for hotels — not quite the gritty history that Azalea would like us to believe.
Redfoo got that family money! His dad, Berry Gordy, Jr., founded the Motown record label, and his mother was a writer-producer. Guess that's why his music is so worry-free!
Lil Dicky
Comedic rapper Lil Dicky comes from an upper-middle class family in Philadelphia. After graduating college Summa Cum Laude, he moved to San Francisco to work at ad agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. Dicky gave it all up to pursue his career as a rapper.
Drake (or Aubrey Graham) grew up in an upper-middle class neighborhood in Toronto and started acting on Degrassi at age 15. His comfortable upbringing, coupled with that sweet TV cash, brought Drake some harsh criticism for his song, "Started from the Bottom," because, well, he started from at least the middle.
Jaden Smith
Jaden Smith is a 17-year-old rapper who grew up wanting for nothing — he is the son of big-screen superstars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, after all. Without money troubles to focus on, Jaden opens up his mind to other things, like the inner working of the universe and breaking gender barriers. (See his Twitter for more.) In 2016, he was worth about $8 million.

<![CDATA[The Best Songs About Enemies]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/songs-about-enemies/ranker-music
Hate is a powerful emotion, and many musicians have turned their experiences into songs for their enemies. This list features the best songs about enemies, ranked by your votes. Some of the greatest enemy songs are about a group of haters, but other good enemy songs are written with one specific person in mind.

Bob Dylan told off his former friend turned nemesis with his scathing hit, “Positively 4th Street.” This track contains the lyrics, “Yes, I wish that for just one time/You could stand inside my shoes/You’d know what a drag it is/To see you.” Ouch! Kanye West addressed his haters with “Power” and Dawes put old feuds behind them on “Things Happen.”

In the early-1990s, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E went from N.W.A. collaborators to bitter rivals. Music fans heard this feud play out in song with Dre's “F*ck Wit Dre Day” and Eazy's response track, “Real Muthaphuckkin G's.” Other good songs about enemies, nemeses, and foes on this list include “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” and “Killing in the Name.”

Do you have a favorite song about enemies? Vote up to move it to the top of this list and please add any songs we may have missed.

The best albums of 1994 as chosen by Mojo magazine. Cover art and track listings for each of these top albums of 1994 are included. This Albums of the Year 1994 list is ranked with the best records at the top. Mojo magazine is just about the best authority for quality music in the world, and although their main focus is rock music, they also do other genres like jazz and world music. Still, as great as Mojo is, it's easy to see albums on their lists that haven't aged well, as well as great records that didn't make their list - but this is often the problem with year-end music lists, it takes time for good records to grow on you!

<![CDATA[The Best Songs About Pizza]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/the-best-songs-about-pizza/reference
The great part about music is that you can write a song about anything, but for this list we're ranking the best songs about pizzas. Some of these songs are cheesy while others a perfect slice from cutting edge new artists. From Ween's famously rejected jingle "Where'd the Cheese Go?" to Das Racist's cult hip hop classic "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell," the theme that ties this tracks together is pizza. Do you have a favorite pizza song? You can even add additional tracks to the poll if any good pizza songs are missing, so feel free to contribute to the list. We've included YouTube videos to accompany the songs when available, so think of this page as a pizza songs playlist.

Some of the songs about pizza below include "The Ghosts of Saturday Night (After Hours at Napoleone's Pizza House)" by Tom Waits, "Don't Take the Pizza" by The Fall, and the classic "That's Amore" by Dean Martin. A song can qualify to be on this in two ways. First, the song has pizza in the title or lyrics, or some close variation of that word. Second, the song is conceptually about pizzas, even if it doesn't specifically mention that word.

With a rapper like Kanye West, it's easy to focus on his abundance of hits. His catalog boasts some of the biggest rap songs, but that doesn't mean everything else is chopped liver. Some of the most underrated Kanye West songs are perhaps some of his best, depending on who you ask, of course. For a rapper like Kanye West who has so many hit songs, it's easy for other great tracks to get lost in the shuffle and there's a batch of songs that, for one reason or another, have been overlooked.

So what are the most underrated Kanye West songs? Well, this list can include any song outside of his greatest hits (you know those, don't pretend you don't) and that means even singles are fair game. You'll see a number of songs you're familiar with, and others you aren't. But that's the joy of this list. There are so many Kanye West songs, freestyles, and verses - if you think one song is underrated, then add it! <![CDATA[The Best Metal Guitarists and Guitar Teams]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/crowdranked-list/best-metal-guitarists-and-guitar-teams
List of the greatest metal guitarists of all time, with photos. Clearly, the list contains a broad selection of guitarists who can still be classified as "metal," though some of the featured guitarists predate the period in which "heavy metal" was enjoying mainstream, popular success. It also includes guitarists such as Brian May and Jimi Hendrix who are not typically referred to as "metal guitarists" as their primary genre – but their guitar sounds were actually highly influential in early heavy metal music.

Who are the best metal guitarists of all time? Which musicians shredded the hardest on their guitars? The list also notably contains memorable duos or guitar groups, as line-ups featuring multiple guitarists who compliment one another is such a fixture of the metal genre. Guitarists who are featured as part of a group (such as Megadeth's Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman or KISS's Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley) should not be listed individually except in rare circumstances where that guitarist had notable success and a specific style while playing solo as well as with a metal group. If you can think of anyone who would be in your personal top 100, then definitely add them to this list.

AC/DC is among the most iconic bands in rock and roll history. The ultimate garage band, they have achieved a status few bands are capable of. They have the ability to appeal to fans of most any genre of music without changing their sound, and this is just one of the reasons why they are considered by many to be one of the best rock bands of all time. Vote for the AC/DC albums you love the most, and of course, rerank this list in any order you like.

Which of AC/DC's 15 studio albums rank highest on this list is arguably dependent on whether you are a fan of Bon Scott or Brian Johnson. The truth is, both fit the AC/DC sound perfectly, and Bon would no doubt look down from on high with thumbs or horns raised. There is no doubt, however, that these albums contain some of the greatest AC/DC songs ever recorded.

AC/DC is an enduring rock band in an era when great bands often fall on the wayside in favor of newer, "hotter" young groups. Why? Because this band recorded some of the greatest albums of all time. <![CDATA[The Best Punk Movies]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/the-best-punk-movies/all-genre-movies-lists
A list of the best punk movies. These are movies about punk culture, feature either punk characters, or punk culture as a central theme in the film genre punk. We believe we've got them all, but if your favorite punk film isn't on the list of the best punk films, please feel free to add it to the list yourself. Punk was a music movement born in the late 1970s in both America and Great Britain.

At the heart of punk was the concept of "being yourself". Today though, with mainstream retailers still trying to cash in on "punk culture", punk has become more of an image than a set of values. The music has also become plagued with "mallcore" bands pre-packaged to appear punk.

The best punk bands often play for years before they're discovered. And like those bands that play to a hard-core audience before they're discovered, some of these punk films may be new discoveries for you. If you're into punk, then these are the punk movies for you.

What are the best punk movies? The funnest thing is that not all of these movies are about punk rock or music. They can be about people acting like punks, like in Fight Club or A Clockwork Orange, just to name a few.

<![CDATA[Awesome Bands With Nonsensical Names]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/awesome-bands-with-nonsensical-names/awesomeballa
Don't judge a book by its cover, but feel free to judge an indie band because the more random the name, the cooler than band. Some of these band names make no sense to the average fan, listener or even critic, but they serve a purpose: to make the band's name something you will never forget. It may sound weird, odd or even a bit peculiar, but that's the point, isn't it? Band names are supposed to represent that free spirited, wild attitude projected in their music. Don't let a band's bizarre name fool you: many times they are well thought out and are thought-provoking. What is nonsensical and silly to one person is genius to another. Judging a band by its name can be deceiving and shortsighted, especially if the songs are as good as those by the bands on this list.

You may be distracted by these bands, but if you see and hear to them their name will make a ton of sense. Even if that name makes little sense to you when you first hear it, the fact that it is memorable is half the battle. Nonsensical or not, when you cut to the chase, these bands can rock and that's all that really matters in the end. Doesn't that count the most?

Well, more likely, the sillier the name the more awesome the band t-shirt, but here are 20 bands with seemingly random names that really know do how to rock.
Awesome Bands With Nonsensical Names,

Balkan Beat Box
One of the most perfect examples of musical fusion is definitely Balkan Beat Box, formed out of a desire to integrate old world Mediterranean and traditional music with hip-hop beats and sounds. On their tracks you can expect to hear singers and instruments from the Mediterranean and ragga (type of dance-hall reggae) inspired dance beats. Formed by Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat, and later joined by MC Tomer Yosef, the group has worked with other gypsy rock bands like Gogol Bordello (also on the list) and has gained a strong club and dance-hall cult following since releasing their first album (self-titled) in 2005.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Dinosaur Jr

a sound of knocking or rapping: a sharp rat-a-tat on the window.
Also, rat-a-tat-tat .

1675–85; imit.

Electronic, psychedelic, house rock is the best way to sum up Ratatat's sound. Boasting such credentials as being the first band to perform a public show inside of NYC's Guggenheim and working with Grammy-nominated artists MGMT and Kid Cudi, Ratatat is by no means afraid to step outside of the mainstream musical box and experiment with sound and visuals on their albums and in their shows. And as their name denotes, the band's sound is often marked by sharp, short yet rhythmical beats.
TV on the Radio

Vampire Weekend

Cage the Elephant

The xx

Miike Snow

The Airborne Toxic Event
Combining the ability to rock and the ability to totally create songs that are the auditory definitions of human emotions, the Airborne Toxic Event got its name from a part of a novel (which emphasized themes like man's consumption by the media and his mortality) by Don DeLillo called "White Noise."

Founding member Mikel Jollet started the group after he realized the novel he was working on was actually an album and the band played their first show just one month after its formation. Sporting fans like U2 and having had their song "Gasoline" featured in Band Hero, the group is gaining pop**arity in the LA and indie music scenes and has been playing festivals and shows across the country.

<![CDATA[The Hidden Meanings Behind Popular U2 Songs]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/u2-hidden-song-meanings/mike-rothschild
With a difficult songwriting process that involves writing lyrics to fit melodies, U2's songs can almost all be interpreted in a number of ways. While some are straightforward and obvious, others lend themselves to be looked at as simple love songs, tributes, or religious allegories. Many artists and rock bands are known for having hidden meanings scattered throughout their songs, and U2 is no exception.

In addition to their difficult song writing process, throw in lead singer Bono's habit of making up stories to fit song origins, and you have a band with numerous hidden meanings to their songs. From "I Will Follow" to "Vertigo" there's plenty to unpack when it comes to U2 songs and their song lyrics.
These U2 tracks all have hidden (or alternate) meanings, and might not mean exactly what you think they mean. Maybe you think you know what Bono, The Edge, Clayton, and Mullen are on about, but you might be surprised.

The Hidden Meanings Behind Popular U2 Songs,

This fan favorite was never released as a single, as Bono felt the song was sloppy and unfinished. But it became a staple of their live show, often stretching to eight or nine minutes. While the song is clearly about addiction, the actual subject of the song has varied. At a show in Pittsburgh, Bono claimed it was about Andy Rowen, the brother of a friend of his.

But in 1987, Bono claimed it was about a friend of his who died of a heroin overdose (which Andy Rowen did not) and about the nature of drug abuse in general. Finally, in Sweden he said: "I wrote the words about a friend of mine; his name was Gareth Spaulding, and on his 21st birthday he and his friends decided to give themselves a present of enough heroin into his veins to kill him.” Any or all of those versions could be true.

The signature song on Achtung Baby, “One” was another track that emerged from the meandering Berlin sessions. Various interpretations of the lyrics include that the song is about a gay son coming out to his father, a failing relationship between two lovers who hurt each other in equal measure, Bono's own strained relationship with his father, or the promise brought on by a reunified Germany (“we’re one / but we’re not the same.”)

Bono himself has said there’s also an element of critiquing the “we’re all one” philosophy of Eastern religions.

I Will Follow
While on the surface, U2’s first hit seems like a fairly straightforward song about not letting go of a lover, according to Bono, the lyrics actually reference the unconditional love between a mother and child, and that no matter what the child does, the mother will not give up on the child.

Bono’s own mother died when he was 14, and it’s easy to see the trauma of this reflected in lyrics like “a boy tries hard to be a man/his mother takes him by the hand.”
New Year's Day
While inspired by the anti-Communist Solidarity movement in Poland, “New Year’s Day” actually began as a love song from Bono to his wife. But as they were recording, Bono had a mental picture of Lech Walesa, the leader of Solidarity, leading a workers strike on a snowy New Year's Day.

So the lyrics were rewritten on the fly and the track became much more political than personal. The mixture of the two meanings is still in evidence, judging by the sometimes glaring contrast in the lyrics between “gold is the reason for the wars we wage” and “I want to be with you night and day.”

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
As with most of U2’s music, the band developed the melody and choruses first, based on jam sessions, then Bono wrote the lyrics to fit the music. In the case of one of the band’s biggest hits, though, the key line of the song didn’t come from Bono, it came from guitarist The Edge, who’d written the phrase “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” in a lyric notebook, allegedly inspired by a line in the Bob Dylan song “Idiot Wind.”

The rest of the song was quickly written and recorded, and it became a classic rock standard. As to the meaning of the song, it’s one of the most straightforward in the band’s catalog, about Bono’s continued search for spiritual fulfillment.
Angel of Harlem
Ostensibly a tribute to soul singer Billie Holiday (herself nicknamed “The Angel of Harlem), the song doubles as a travelogue of the band’s first trip to New York in 1980. The “cold and wet December day” on which the band “touch the ground at JFK” is an explicit reference to the band’s first American concert, which took place on December 6th, 1980 at the New York rock club the Ritz – and that hearing Holiday on the radio didn’t make them feel like they were in such an alien place.
The band’s 1981 hit came from their second album October, which was the most overtly religious of any they’ve done. The song “Gloria” reflects Bono’s spirituality, most especially in the Latin chorus. More hidden are the explicit Biblical references, working in lines from Colossians 2:9-10 ("Only in You I'm complete") and James 5:7-9 ("The door is open / You're standing there").

Conversely, Bono has claimed the song is about a female image of God – and is also a reference to the Van Morrison song of the same name.
While Bono is clear that he based the lyrics of the last track on War on Pslam 40, (the first line of the song is a direct lift from the Bible) he muddied the waters just a bit later on. In 1987, he declared during a concert that, “we had one more song to do. We wrote this song in about ten minutes, we recorded it in about ten minutes, we mixed it in about ten minutes and we played it, then, for another ten minutes and that's nothing to do with why it's called '40.'”

Whether any of that is true is anyone’s guess.

Mysterious Ways
After the critical drubbing the band took for the album, tour, and film project Rattle and Hum, The Edge remarked that their next album would be the sound of “chopping down The Joshua Tree. “Mysterious Ways” was created during their 1991 sessions in Berlin, and its elliptical lyrics fit the pattern of a band trying not to be quite so on the nose anymore.

In one sense, it’s a song addressed to a man living without love in his life and putting women on a pedestal (indeed, the working title for Achtung Baby was Fear of Women) but there’s also a nursery rhyme element to the lyrics, with The Edge advocating for simple phrases the band had never used before, such as “it’s all right.”

Pride (In the Name of Love)
One of U2’s most straightforward songs, “Pride” offers a clear parallel between the betrayal of Jesus and the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. What’s less well known is that Bono makes a pretty glaring historical mistake in the lyrics, singing “early morning / April 4th / shots ring out in the Memphis sky” when King was actually shot at about 6 pm.

Bono has acknowledged the error and now changes the lyric to “early evening” when the band performs the song live.

We all saw Faithless headline V Festival and were amazed by a dance band having as much presence as a Rock band. Big synth lines and dance rhythms definitely are throughout our album.

French electro rock M83 have always hit our senses with their big pad synths and ghostly tones. Love their productions, and is a key feature on bringing the synth up front in a lot of tracks.
Danish band one of our early inspirations.. Mew have definitely inspired us on their clash of melodic pop and chunky rhythms.
Radiohead are the most progressive Rock band of our generation in our opinion, from delving into any Radiohead album there is so much depth and variation. There's always a Radiohead tune playing somewhere in the camp.
Sigur Rós
Sigur Ros have such a talent of creating atmosphere and reflection. Their beauty and epicness, definitely is a big part of how we like to sculpt our textures.
2 Many DJ’s

<![CDATA[The Best Bands with Black in the Name]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/the-best-bands-with-black-in-the-name/ranker-music

Of all the colorful band names, more use black than any other shade. And while black isn’t technically a color, for the purposes of this list, it sure is. Some of the most iconic bands in music history have black in their moniker. You can wonder why – but it's undeniable that adding the word “black” to another word makes it just feel somehow cooler. These are some of the best bands with black in the name.

When it comes to great black band names, it’s hard not to immediately think of Black Sabbath. But the band’s original name was the Earth Blues Company, and later, just Earth. Why the change? The story goes that Geezer Butler had a spooky encounter, and the group recorded a song about the experience. They called it “Black Sabbath,” an homage to the Boris Karloff horror movie. Eventually, Earth morphed into Black Sabbath, and the rest is music history.

Bands with the color black in the name come from all genres of music. Black Flag is heavy metal. The Black Keys are a bluesy-rock band, as are The Black Crowes. The Black Eyed Peas and BLACKstreet are hip hop, and Black Uhuru is reggae/dub. But which is the best? That's up to you to decide.

Enjoy voting on this list of diverse bands with black in their name!

<![CDATA[The Greatest Dancing Singers]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/crowdranked-list/30-greatest-dancers-in-music
We know them for their lyrical talent (or lack of) but the real question is, can they bust a move? The best singers aren't always the best performers, especially on the dance floor. So this is your chance to rank who music's best movers and groovers are. In all genres in music's history, the most rhythmic dancer in music will be decided based on how everyone votes.

Michael Jackson was as famous for his dancing moves as he was for his record-breaking hits. And icon Prince made a name for himself with his risque, but incredibly talented stage antics. And with the recent revolution of the viral video, wonders such as Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus have become infamous for their signature moves. Love 'em or hate 'em, they got your attention!

Here you have the chance to vote on the best musical celebrity dancers.

<![CDATA[The Greatest Musicians Who Died Before 30]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/greatest-musicians-who-died-before-30/ranker-music

List of the greatest musicians who died before they reached the age of 30. On this list you’ll find all of the musicians who had the misfortune to die before turning 30 — from all time periods and including rock stars who died young and singers from other genres. Some died in horrific ways, others were the victims of unfortunate accidents or genetics, but they all left the world a little too soon, earning them a place on this, the list of the most amazing musicians who died before 30.

This list includes members of The 27 Club — those young and rising stars who died at the age of 27. Tragically, many died of overdose or under drug-related circumstances, including Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, and Kurt Cobain. Other musicians on this list died from poisoning (Robert Johnson), plane crashes (Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper), and even murder (Mia Zapata). In the hip-hop world, both Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. were killed outright, both having been shot repeatedly. No one knows for certain who murdered the two rap legends, but it is beyond a doubt that the musicians died too young. The two rappers may be gone, but they live on in fans’ memories.

On this list you can find all of the musicians who died too young, never reaching the age of 30. The list contains rock musicians, rappers, guitar players, drummers, singers, jazz musicians, and more, but the musical style differences aren’t important. Fans still mourn these great artists, often wondering what might have been had these musicians lived.

<![CDATA[Rank All of Taylor Swift's Exes]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/taylor-swift-ex-boyfriends-ranked/jessica-lawshe

Taylor Swift is known for her amazing songs, her great voice, and her awesome girl squad. But she may be even more famous for her ever-growing list of song-inspiring exes. Seriously, Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriends could be fuel for many albums to come. We'll just have to wait and see, but in the meantime, we're leaving it up to you to rank all of Taylor Swift's exes!

It seems our T. Swift is just drawn to heartbreak. And while we love the songs that her failed romances create, we still want the best for her! We knew that John Mayer was never going to be a good fit for her - hello, he's like "Mr. Heartache." We had hope for Joe Jonas, but shame on him for that 27-second phone call breakup. Then we thought maybe Harry Styles would be a good match. He wasn't, but we're pretty grateful for the songs "Out of the Woods" and "Style" that the One Direction singer inspired.

While Taylor has been romantically linked to a bunch of heartthrobs, including Zac Efron, this list is focused on the guys she actually dated - not just guys she was rumored to be dating. Although, it is pretty hard to keep it all straight!

It's hard to pick which one of Taylor's exes is the best and which one is the worst, which is why we're tossing this list of Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriends to you. Upvote the Taylor Swift exes that you think she should have stayed with!

Rank All of Taylor Swift's Exes,

Calvin Harris
Taylor dated the DJ and producer from March 2015 to June 2016
Cory Monteith

Taylor and the late Glee star allegedly dated in 2010.

Jake Gyllenhaal

Though the two only dated from October 2010 to January 2011, the songs "We Are Never Getting Back Together" and "The Moment I Knew" are rumored to be about Jake.

John Mayer

Taylor was only 19 when she dated John Mayer from November 2009 to February 2010. He was 32.

Lucas Till

Taylor dated her "You Belong With Me" music video co-star Lucas Till from March 2009 to April 2009.

Taylor Lautner

Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner dated from August 2009 to November 2009 after meeting on the set of Valentine’s Day.

Tom Hiddleston

Swift and Hiddleston - collectively known as Hiddleswift - dated during the summer of 2016. Only "official" for a few short months, E! News reported on their demise in early 2016, quoting a source close to the couple: "Taylor felt he wanted to take the relationship to be too public."

Joe Jonas

Joe Jonas allegedly dumped Taylor via a 27-second phone call in October 2008 after the two started dating in July of that same year.

Chord Overstreet

Taylor was linked to Glee star Chord Overstreet for a few months in 2011.

Harry Styles

Harry Styles and Taylor Swift were only together from December 2012 to January 2013, but apparently it was enough time to fuel lots of angst-y break-up songs.

<![CDATA[The Best Bands Named After Songs and Albums]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/bands-named-after-songs/ranker-music

A variety of different bands have taken their names from other songs or albums. Bands named after songs represent virtually every music genre, including classic rock, alternative, metal, R&B, and more. Impress your friends with your knowledge of music trivia by learning about all these bands who took their name from songs!

The stories behind how bands named after albums and songs got their monikers are fascinating. Arguably the most famous band with a song in their name is The Rolling Stones. Legend has it that when asked about the band’s name by the media, original member Brian Jones spotted a Muddy Waters album nearby – with the song “Rollin’ Stone” – and answered, “The Rolling Stones.” And yes, if you were wondering, Rolling Stone magazine also took its name from the same song.

Another iconic British band, The Moody Blues, supposedly took inspiration for its name from the Duke Ellington song “Mood Indigo.” Radiohead got its name from the Talking Heads song “Radio Head.” Judas Priest got its name from Bob Dylan’s song “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest.” And Death Cab for Cutie was inspired by the song of the same name, performed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, most notably in the Beatles’ 1967 Magical Mystery Tour movie.

What are the greatest bands named after other songs? How about album bands? All of them are represented here on this list, so be sure to vote for your favorites.

The best albums of 2002 as chosen by Mojo magazine. Cover art and track listings for each of these top albums of 2002 are included. This Albums of the Year 2002 list is ranked with the best records at the top.

The words "sexy pop star" can be defined in only one word: Madonna. In the last 30+ years in her career, Madonna became the mother of sexy female pop stars, influencing the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, etc. While she may have started off with corny '80s mall pop, she would progress and re-invent herself 15 to 20 times over the next few years. One thing that hasn't changed: her killer body. Sure, she might have aged a bit (She is in her mid 50's), but she remains just as sexy, influential, and powerful as she was when she began her career. It wasn't easy--she has a whole catalog of sexy videos--but we were able to narrow it down to twenty. Old and new Madge fans will have fun with this list.

<![CDATA[18 Inspirational 20th Century Vintage Jazz Dance Videos]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/vintage-jazz-dance-videos/rachel-green
Jazz dance and jazz music took the world by storm during the first half of the 20th century, filling ballrooms and clubs with live music, youngsters dancing, and Vaudeville shows, turning the corner from a previously stiff, Anglican culture to a vivacious, robust, and energetic world that reflected the industrial boom of the time.

The jazz dance is a derivative of African tribal dance, borrowing its rhythmic, improvisational nature, and European partner dancing, which provided the structured way in which partners connected and stepped in time with one another. Seeing its first incarnations as early as the turn of the 20th century, jazz dancing bloomed into what would later be dubbed the original American folk dance and one of the most important and historical dances in American history.

The videos here were not only footage of influential events, like rare footage of African-Americans dancing the Cakewalk and displaying some of the first times improvisation was used in such a structured dance, but they're also some of the most referenced snippets of film today that swing dancers use for inspiration and education, such as Whitey's Lindy Hoppers' most famous dance piece from Hellzapoppin'. They feature some of the most celebrated jazz dancers in history, such as Frankie Manning, Josephine Baker, and the Nicholas Brothers, as well as a variety of dances that fall under the jazz and swing dance umbrella: Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, and vernacular jazz dancing.
18 Inspirational 20th Century Vintage Jazz Dance Videos,

Banana Dance
Perhaps better known as the Banana Dance, this performance came at the height of the Charleston craze, featuring one of the most iconic female singers and dancers of all time: Josephine Baker. At the height of her career, she was the most famous entertainer in France, to which she immigrated in order to further her career. Her fabulous banana dance has been referenced and replicated in pop culture ever since she performed this piece in Paris in 1927.
Stormy Weather (1943)
The Nicholas Brothers, featured in this clip of Stormy Weather (as well as the illustrious Cab Calloway and his orchestra) were some of the most rhythmically attuned dancers of the 20th century. They were the pioneers of tap dancing, paving the way for generations to come. Fred Astaire told the two brothers that it was, "the greatest movie musical number he had ever seen."

Plus, look at all of those splits. Hot damn!
One Girl, Two Boys (1944)
From the 1944 film Swing Fever, this clip features Jeanne Phelps Veloz, Don Gallagher, and Lenny Smith, all dancers from Southern California. Fun fact: Veloz, the icon of "Hollywood" style Lindy Hop, still regularly attends Pasadena's weekly Lindy Groove. Take the beginning drop-in lesson and ask her for a dance!
A Groovie Movie (1944)
A funny instructional movie, this lengthier clip features cool Jitterbug moves meant for the heppest of cats. The narrator, whose commentary is full of popular slang of the time and can't keep up with what the dancers are doing, tries to explain what the dancers are demonstrating. The most interesting thing to note in this clip is how these Southern California dancers lean back so much more than those dancing in Harlem at this time, particularly the followers.

Maharaja (1943)
While Lindy Hop was the prevailing swing dance in New York City amongst the black community, Balboa was taking shape in SoCal and was danced primarily by the white community.

Created on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California, jazz clubs playing hot numbers would be so tightly packed that the dancers were forced to dance chest to chest.

Though similar to Lindy Hop, an untrained eye can see that Balboa dancers spend much more time dancing close together, whereas Lindy Hop dancers spend more time moving away from each other.

This short features Hal and Betty Takier, some of the best Balboa dancers in history.
Ask Uncle Sol (1937)
Another clip featuring Shorty George and his dance partner, Big Bea, this clip is best known for its end move, a then-genderbent sequence in which Big Bea pulls Shorty onto her back and walks offstage with him kicking his legs. Shorty's height was often used for comic effect, helping the couple out-dance others in competitions. They were also founders of the dance troupe, Shorty Snowden Dancers, which is known to be the first Lindy Hop troupe ever.
Hellzapoppin' (1941)
Though the movie has absolutely nothing to do with dancing, this is the most iconic and popular Lindy Hop clip of all time, featuring Whitey's Lindy Hoppers from Harlem, the most prestigious jazz and swing dance troupe of all time. Frankie Manning, the ambassador of Lindy Hop (in the coveralls) dances with his partner, Frida Washington, in the last shine before the final ensemble sequence.

The final sequence, known as the California routine (aptly named after the state in which it was choreographed by Manning) is now one of the most popular and well-known routines in swing dancing.

After Seben (1929)
This clip stars the famous George "Shorty" Snowden, one of the pioneers of swing dancing in the 1920s and 1930s, who coined the name Lindy Hop, after Charles Lindbergh, who had just "hopped" over the Atlantic.

Released in 1929, this clip shows the earliest forms of partner jazz dancing. Unlike the other videos on this list in which many of the dancers were bent in a more athletic position, Shorty George and his partner dance in a much more upright and ballroom-like position, a recent descendant of the Cakewalk.

Shorty, the third dancer to come out, demonstrates the Breakaway, a move that later transformed into Lindy Hop, circa 1934.
Keep Punching (1939)
Keep Punching features The Big Apple, a line dance created in The Big Apple night club in Columbia, South Carolina during the 1930s. Originally a call-and-response dance, much like square dancing, The Big Apple's roots can be found in ring shouts from the 1860s, a religious dance done by slaves on Southern plantations in which dancers move in a circular formation while shouting and clapping.

This particular version was choreographed by the legendary Frankie Manning, who although he had never actually seen The Big Apple, choreographed based on only what he had heard about the dance. Though it was supposed to be used for Judy Garland's 1937 Everybody Sings, it was later cut due to a dispute involving proper payment for the dancers.

The Big Apple became such a sensation around the country that Time magazine called 1937 the year of The Big Apple. Manning's iteration of the dance sensation is still regularly performed around the world today.

The Cakewalk (1903)
Perhaps the oldest clip on the list, this small, soundless snippet features the Cakewalk, a proper, upright dance created on Southern plantations in the 1870s and was originally danced only by men. At the turn of the century, however, women were incorporated, and soon more "grotesque," improvisational movements were added into the dance, birthing the first ideas of jazz dance in its most modern state. The grotesque movements in this clip are most obvious when one dancer wiggles his knees.

<![CDATA[The Best Bands Named After Drugs]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/bands-named-after-drugs/ranker-music

Bands named after drugs or medicines aren’t hard to find in music today. Some of the names are quite straightforward, using “acid” or “cannabis” in them. Others are subtler, and likely have an interesting back story. These are some of the best bands with drugs in their name.

Pearl Jam is one of the more well-known, widely acclaimed bands on this list – yet the origin of their name is debatable. One story involves Pearl Jam getting its name because lead singer Eddie Vedder’s grandmother, Pearl, made jam with peyote in it. It might not be true, but regardless, it earns this band a spot on this drug bands list.

Between the Acid Junkies and Bongzillas of this list lie bands with more subtle nods to drugs. Green Day’s name came about when Billie Joe Armstrong wrote a song about his first experience with pot – and liked the song enough that it became the band’s moniker. Did you know that a “Motorhead” is also a speed addict in British slang? And Dexys Midnight Runners makes it appearance, "dexy" is short for the stimulant dexedrine. It’s a legal drug – but those count too.

Who are the best bands named after a drug? There are plenty of excellent drug band names to choose from, so enjoy voting!

Blue Cheer

Dexys Midnight Runners

Green Day

<![CDATA[The Sexiest Artists of All Time]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/crowdranked-list/sexiest-artists-in-music
If you've got it, flaunt it, and that's what these rock stars do. And for that they've been rewarded with the honor of sexiest artists of all time. Many of these artists have maintained their sex appeal for decades, take Madonna and Janet Jackson for example. Then there's rock gods like Bruce Springsteen and Sting, who still make hearts race during live shows. Many of whom are steaming up a new generation of music fans, while Britney Spears, Usher, and Justin Timberlake grew up with their fan base, artists like Trey Songz, Katy Perry, and Rihanna won over new music fans. And some of whom made your parents (or grandparents) melt with their steamy videos and performances like Elvis (he invented sex appeal in rock n' rolll) and Tina Turner. While some may no longer be with us, musicians like Aaliyah, 2Pac and Leslie Cheung will always be remembered for their massive sex appeal. Rock, pop, R&B, hip-hop, even country--it's all here. Steamy videos are included.

<![CDATA[The Best Beatles Songs]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/crowdranked-list/best-beatles-songs
List of best songs ever recorded by The Beatles, the iconic British rock band joining John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Between the years 1960 and 1970, the band recorded 12 studio albums and a few other scattered songs and recordings, across a diverse range of styles. The albums have all proved massively influential, particularly the band's later experiments with psychedelia, world music and conceptual long-form albums. Each member of the so-called Fab Four found later success as a solo artist (with McCartney and Starr continuing to record albums and sell out concerts to the present day), and their combined efforts are consistently ranked among the greatest rock music of all time.

Childhood friends McCartney and Lennon originally formed a band in the late '50s called The Quarrymen, and soon after brought in George Harrison as a guitarist. After playing in Hamburg, Germany, and rotating through a few other musicians, the group returned to the UK in 1962 and joined with drummer Ringo Starr (then of the band Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.) By 1963, the group started releasing popular songs, including "Please Please Me" and "Love Me Do." The phenomenon of "Beatlemania," typified by mobs of young girls screaming and rioting whenever the band appeared in public, took hold this same year. A trip to the US, highlighted by an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, is commonly associated with the increasingly popularity of British music in America, often called the "British Invasion."

More successful albums followed - including the soundtrack for the Beatles' first film, "A Hard Days Night." In 1965, the band released the landmark "Rubber Soul," followed by "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." which added a good deal of complexity to the band's previously "bubblegum" pop sound. (The Beatles would later reveal that much of the change in their sound was due to their increasing experimentation with drugs like marijuana and LSD during this period.)

Vote: The Best Solo Songs by Former Beatles

The band's final two albums - "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" - were recorded during a period of intense strife and conflict between the band members. McCartney and Lennon were infamously feuding and difficult to work with, prompting Harrison to essentially quit the band and leave the studio. (He eventually returned and brought in keyboard player Billy Preston to hopefully change the dynamic in the studio.) In 1969, Lennon released the first solo song from a Beatles member - "Give Peace a Chance," credited to the "Plastic Ono Band." (It was a reference to Lennon's new wife, Yoko Ono.) In September of that year, Lennon announced his intention to leave the group to his fellow band members.

<![CDATA[The Most Hated Musicians in America]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/most-hated-musicians-in-america/malmrphy
Maybe they're not bad musicians; maybe not everybody in America hates them. One thing is for sure, if these artists decided to stop making music, very few people would be upset. This list acknowledges musical artists that are widely hated in America. For the record, these decisions aren't personal, but in a sense we can understand why most people hate them. One Direction? Check! Ke$ha? Gotcha! Nicki Minaj? Done! Justin Beiber? Of course! Some of these artists are widely talented and are on this list for their off stage antics. Others aren't, but are still widely popular. Fans can vote and add to see which artists is the most hated in the United States of America. And one more thing, when you do vote or add, please don't be biased (just because you may not like Rihanna doesn't mean the rest of America feels the same way).

The Most Hated Musicians in America,

Chris Brown
Why He's Loved
A teen-pop sensation right out the gate, C-Breezy won the hearts of millions of girls everywhere, and drew comparisons to Michael Jackson and Usher for his impeccable dancing, boyish charm, and flawless smile.

Why We Hate Him

Like the Biebs, Breezy's thin vocal abilities earned him a small batch of naysayers, but he was still one of the biggest pop sensations of his time. Then one horrible incident with Rihanna later, he is still a target of comedic satire and ridicule. While his music manages to shift the focus for one minute, he can't stay out of the tabloids the next. Whether it be for his graffiti, his rocky love life or for throwing down with Drake, Frank Ocean, a photo bomber, or even a mirror.

UPDATE: Chris' personal life is still in limbo. After ending his probation for that incident in 2009, he fathered a child, and is in a custody battle with the mother of that child. But still his music still warrants a countless number of hits, and his fans--unlike these hoes--have been very loyal.

Courtney Love
Why She's Loved
As the lead vocalist in the band Hole, Love was praised and heralded as the "Princess of Grunge". Her attitude, style, and musical prowess has influenced a whole generation of young women in rock music.

Why We Hate Her
While her attitude inspired many, it has also rubbed others the wrong way. Case in point: she has been known to hurl insults and objects at fellow celebrities (see her transparently "friendly" confrontation with Madonna at the 1995 VMAs). Many conspiracy theorists also blame her for her husband, Kurt Cobain's suicide--due to their public marital problems. And lest we forget, to the rest of Nirvana, she was another Yoko Ono. Nowadays she is known more for being drunk and high than for her musical legacy.
Lil Wayne
Why He's Loved
They call him the (or at least he calls himself) "The Best Rapper Alive", his lyrical abilities make that a valid arguement. His album Tha Carter III, introduced him to a wider audience, and after going platinum in one week thanks to said record, Wayne found himself collaborating with Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Eminem among others. Even more impressive was his resume collaborating with such pop singers as Enrique Iglesias and Bruno Mars.

Why He's Hated
His newfound pop-stardom has led many close minded hip-hop fans to question his street-cred and artistry. The fact that he is usually high on syrup, like, all the damn time, sometimes can hinder his lyricism. Wayne is sometimes cited for speaking absolute non-sense. And his raspy voice doesn't help either. Even worse, Wayne has also been accused of copyrighting and stealing bars from other rappers.
Insane Clown Posse
Why Their Loved
Uh, we're not sure why, but they are. They have certified gold and platinum records, and a devoted following called "The Juggalos".

Why We Hate Them
How can we put this, politely: THEIR MUSIC FUCKING SUCKS!! And even worse, are their devout Juggalos, now seen as a gang; there have been a countless number of murders and robberies by people that claim to be Juggalos.
Kanye West
Why He's Loved
Let's face it: this man is pretty damn talented. A standout lyricist with an impressive musical ear, almost every Kanye album is considered either classic or excellent by critics. Every time he releases music, we're hooked. Every album he makes is always better than the last. And he's not afraid to speak his mind either.

Why We Hate Him
He has something called a "lack of filter". And that character flaw has prompted him to calling out the president, and snatching the mic from Justice vs. SImian at the EMA awards, and more notably from Taylor Swift during the VMA's causing even more of a stir. The backlash only deepened when he began a relationship with Kim Kardashian, comparing her to Marilyn Monroe.
Limp Bizkit
Why Their Loved
After Korn, Limp Bizkit were seen as the champions of the nu-metal movement of the late '90s, early '00s. Fred Durst was an even bigger celebrity, thanks to his in-your-face attitude and rapping.

Why We Hate Them/Him
For many people, their music is waned and uninspiring. Durst in particular, has been called a "poser", and has an extremely obnoxious personality. He also has claimed to have slept with both Britney and Christina, with both pop princesses denying it profusely. Can you blame them?
Why Their Loved
Ever since their 2000 debut single, "How You Remind Me", these nu-alternative rockers established their staying power with touching songs, cool stage appeal, and talented lead singer.

Why We Hate Them
It's hard to pinpoint when and where Nickelback-lash kicked in, but when it did, it came in hard. As they became more successful, hard core rockers, punks, metalheads, etc. denounced their music, particularly, their lead singer, Chad Kroeger, for reasons unknown. Unfortunately, Kroeger's uncoolness has rubbed off on girlfriend, platinum-selling, pop-punk hottie, Avril Lavigne, and her last self-titled record.

Nicki Minaj
Why She's Loved
Minaj is credited for breathing new life into female MC's. Her lyrical prowess has caught the eye of many, and her crazy fashion choices kept them hooked, inspiring a strange cult of followers. These devout followers are known as "Barbz" .

Why We Hate Her
While she has reached many milestones no other femcee has managed to touch, she has an even bigger army of detractors. For some, it is in part to her annoying nasally voice; for others, her cocky attitude and lack of musical substance. The kicker was when people noticed her fashion style closely resembled that of Lil' Kim. The tipping point was when she was seen on camera shouting at the legendary Mariah Carey on American Idol. As the season went on, the backlash only deepened. Her delusional fans only make matters worse.
Justin Bieber
Why He's Loved?
The beloved teen heartthrob won hearts all over America, with his cute, humble, demeanor in the beginning of his career. Songs like "Never Say Never" made him a role model for kids everywhere, and tween girls couldn't control themselves. He seemed like a guy you could trust with your daughter. That was then...

Why We Hate Him

Before, it seemed as if people were just jealous of his success. Sure, his lack of singing ability and cheesy songs spawned a whole army of haters to go to war with the Beliebers, but his behavior off stage made it really hard for anyone to feel sorry for
him. His multiple attempts to come across as masculine--smoking weed, hanging out with "rappers", trying to grow a mustache--are laughable. Now, he just comes across as an arrogant little brat who has even managed to piss off former president Bill Clinton. And to make matters worse, two videos have surfaced of Biebs making racist remarks early in his career, so I guess he's been a douche for like...ever. Now, there's a petition out to have him deported (10,000 signatures and counting).

UPDATE: After being roasted on Comedy Central, Justin seems to be geared towards a comeback. He came back strong on the charts with "Where Are U Now?", an EDM collaboration with Diplo and Skrillex.

(For more on why we hate the Biebs, checkout the Douchiest Things Justin Bieber Has Ever Done

One Direction
Why Their Loved
For no other reasons, the British pop boy-band have pretty voices, nice personalities and are incredibly good looking. They have sold over five million albums, in the last two years, so regardless of if they are well liked, they will always have their loyal fan-base.

Why We Hate Them
No one over the age of 12 can name a single song by them. But what can be heard is shitty, annoying, repetitive bubblegum pop on the radio every day, since they're so damn popular. Eventually, it got to a point where they get booed off of the VMA stage, and even had Taylor Swift (who used to date Harry Styles of the group) saying, "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" Remember, most of people felt the exact same way about N* Sync, the Backstreet Boys, and every other boy band that came out in the '90s, and it made us realize how good '90s boy bands really were, so thanks, One Direction!

<![CDATA[The Best Songs About Planes]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/songs-about-planes/ranker-music

Flight is a modern miracle, and planes gets plenty of love in popular music. Musicians travel a lot, so they’ve written a lot of songs about airplanes. Some musicians fear flying while others write odes to military aircraft. This list of songs about airplanes covers the entire spectrum of aviation-related tuneage. Lots of airplane songs use planes as a metaphor for running away, or simply suggest them as a very real, practical way of running away. However you feel about planes, you’re sure to find a song on this list that’ll have you flying high in no time.

The Steve Miller Band cover of “Jet Airliner” was a hit song in the ‘70s. It makes sense Miller would be attracted to the tune: His band’s previous single was called “Fly Like an Eagle.” More recently, Far East Movement coined a phrase with "Like a G6," which refers to the Gulfstream G650, a popular private jet.

Maybe the most famous song about flying, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” was written by John Denver and covered by artists including Peter, Paul and Mary, Frank Sinatra, and Liza Minnelli.

Which of these airplane songs send you sky high? Vote for your favorites! If there are any songs about flying you love that aren't here, go ahead and add them to the list!

<![CDATA[Anarchist Musicians]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/anarchist-musicians/rockboy
A list of anarchist musicians. The list includes musicians who are self-described anarchists, regardless of whether or not their music or lyrics specifically deal with anarchy. Anarchism, loosely defined, is the rejection of any kind of compulsory or centralized government. Anarchists typically seek to avoid being ruled or governed in any way, and favor the total abolition of political and nationalistic rule. Many of the musicians on this list take active steps in forwarding their anarchist beliefs or spreading the word about anarchism, and not just with their anarchist songs. For example, members of the anarcho-punk English band Chumbawumba, who used to encourage fans to steal their albums from stores rather than pay for them.

However, some of the other members of the list had more traditional music careers, and were simply outspoken about their anarchist beliefs and politics in their private lives.

The list may include members of popular anarchist bands, but is limited to listing the individual anarchist musicians themselves.

<![CDATA[Beatles Parody Album Covers]]> http://www.ranker-dev.com/list/beatles-parody-album-covers/album-covers
Beatles parody album covers pay tribute what many consider to be the greatest rock band of all time, The Beatles. During their prime, starting in the 1960s, The Beatles released 12 studio albums, each with a memorable album cover. Either to show respect to the band or the cover art, numerous artists, many of whom list The Beatles as an influence, have released their own albums with Beatles parody album covers.

Though The Beatles released a dozen albums, a certain few are remembered as a bit more iconic (and some of the greatest albums of all time) than others and accordingly were parodied more than others. Their Abby Road album cover, featuring the band crossing Abbey Road outside of EMI Studios in London, was not only regarded as one of the best, if not the best, Beatles album ever, but also the one with the most iconic album art. Thousands have visited that same street corner to take similar photographs while numerous bands have gone a step further and used a parody of the image for their own album art.

Other highly parodied albums were picked either for their extremely detailed album art, such as the many faces that are scattered on the face of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, or for their simplicity, showing a blank solid-cover album cover, such as their self-titled release, also known as The White Album.

Even others were designed in such a way that it was easy for other bands to reproduce with their own spin. The cover art for Let It Be and Meet The Beatles, both of which featured portraits of the four band members, fall into that category. Everyone from KISS to Van Halen to Gorillaz to U2 to The Rolling Stones released similar album covers using the same concept.

It should be no surprise that The Beatles album covers have been parodied so often throughout the years as they made such an impact on the world during their run. If The Beatles influenced you or your favorite band to create album art parodies and you think it deserves some love, add the image below!
